Microsoft Ignite 2025 - the AI announcements that matter
Microsoft Ignite 2025 brought a lot of announcements and if you were trying to follow along from home it was easy to get lost in the noise. I went through everything and want to break down the announcements that I think will actually change how enterprise AI projects are built and deployed.
Azure AI Foundry gets bigger
Azure AI Foundry is now the central platform for everything AI on Azure. The model catalog has expanded significantly with models from Mistral, Meta, Cohere and several other providers sitting alongside the OpenAI models. What this means in practice is that you can swap models in and out of your application without changing your integration code because they all sit behind the same API.
This is something I have been recommending to clients for a while - dont hard code your model choice into your architecture. Treat the model as a configuration item and you will thank yourself later when a better or cheaper model becomes available.
Copilot Studio goes deeper on agents
Copilot Studio now supports what Microsoft is calling autonomous agents - agents that can run in the background, monitor triggers and take actions without a human initiating each task. The examples shown at Ignite included an agent that monitors incoming purchase orders and routes them through an approval workflow, and another that checks inventory levels and automatically creates procurement requests.
For organisations already in the Microsoft 365 ecosystem this is a very natural extension of what Copilot was already doing. The key thing to watch here is how well the governance and audit trail works in practice. When agents are taking actions on behalf of users, you need to know exactly what they did and why.
o1 and reasoning models on Azure
OpenAI's o1 reasoning model is now generally available through Azure OpenAI. This model takes longer to respond because it thinks through the problem step by step before answering, but the quality of the output on complex tasks is noticeably better.
Where I see this being useful:
- Contract analysis - complex documents with many interdependencies
- Financial modelling - tasks that require multi-step calculation and verification
- Code review - catching subtle bugs that simpler models miss
- Compliance checking - reasoning through regulatory requirements against a policy document
For everyday chat and simple extraction tasks, o1 is overkill and will cost you more than necessary. Use it where the reasoning depth genuinely adds value.
Real-time voice AI on Azure
Azure AI Speech and the OpenAI Realtime API are now more deeply integrated. You can build voice-based AI assistants that respond in near real-time, which opens up a lot of possibilities for call centre automation and voice-enabled enterprise tools.
The latency has improved significantly compared to the earlier versions of these integrations. If you were put off by the delays in earlier demos, it is worth taking another look.
What to prioritise
If I were advising an enterprise team on what to focus on after Ignite, I would say:
- Get your team familiar with Azure AI Foundry as the single place to manage all your AI resources
- Evaluate whether any of your current workflows are good candidates for autonomous agents in Copilot Studio
- Test o1 on your most complex reasoning tasks and see if the quality improvement justifies the cost
- Start thinking about your AI governance framework before your agent footprint gets too large to manage
The pace of change is not slowing down. The teams that build good foundational practices now will be in a much stronger position to take advantage of what comes next.
